Baby Things I Bought (So Far!)

As a new expecting mom I feel like I have been doing tons of research to try and find the things that are across the board must haves for a newborn. I have been watching a ton of videos, asking friends and family, and have my top 5 things that we have bought so far that everyone has said are perfect to have when bringing home a newborn.

  1. Halo Bassinet

I knew that we were going to want some kind of bassinet in our room for a safe way to co-sleep. Our room is also pretty cozy so we don’t have a ton of room for something big and bulky. Enter the Halo bassinet. This bassinet had great reviews, it is sturdy and the base is spread out enough that there isn’t a risk of it tipping over. Our bed is tall so we needed something that could adjust in height so that I could easily pull him out of the bassinet without getting out of bed a bunch of times. I love that the side of this bends down for easy access to getting him in and out easily. The swivel is also perfect for being able to maneuver the bassinet around to get around it, something important in a small room! The features like a small night light and vibrations also seem like they will come in handy. This is a pricier item but they have different models that are less expensive! We have the mid tier one. I actually got ours from Facebook marketplace for over $100 off the retail price, so I highly recommend looking there first! We found ours in brand new condition and are so happy that we went with that route.

2. Freshly Picked Swaddles

These are a newer product but I am really excited about them. They are supposed to be an easier way to quickly get your baby swaddled and it helps them to stay swaddled because of the mini “baby straight jacket” on the inside of the blanket. I am all for making my job as a new mom easier with something like this, and it will make it easier on Houston too. Win win! The blanket it comes with has velcro too and is ultra soft. I got the plaid and grey swaddles, perfect staple colors. TIP: Sign up for their monthly program! You pay $10 but that money goes right back to your account so you can use it on your purchase and you get 20% off. You can also cancel anytime, it is totally worth it.

3. Dock A Tot

I was really torn on the Dock a Tot vs the Snuggle me because so many people love one or the other. I decided to go with the Dock a Tot after I did an instagram poll and 90% of the moms that responded preferred this one. From what I read I also think that this will be able to last a little longer than the Snuggle Me will because the center is roomier. the only downside is that it does not fit in the Halo all snug like the Snuggle Me would, but I don’t think that will be a huge problem since it is meant to be a lounger. Again, this was another Facebook find! A ton of people sell their new or gently used baby gear on Facebook and you can find stuff that is in great condition for a fraction of the cost.

4. A Dresser Instead of Changing Station

This was something that a lot of people recommended, instead of doing a traditional changing station use the top of the dresser as the changing station. This may seem like a no brainer but it really does make a difference in the amount of storage you are able to have in the room. Our house lacks a ton of storage space so this allows us to really be able to be organized and find a place for everything for our new little man. We already had our dresser and are planning on getting the Skip Hop changing pad to put on top, another highly recommended item that is easy to clean and looks great!

5. Diapers and Wipes (Bulk)

This may seem a little soon to do but honestly, its 2020, anything could happen and being prepared is the most important thing! I remember moms in my community saying that they couldn’t find diapers or wipes for their babies because the shelves were all empty. So we decided to be on the safe side and buy one Costco pack of diapers and one pack of wipes,

Okay so I have not received these in the mail yet but I think the idea is super cool and I have heard great reviews on them! These magnetic clothes are perfect for an easy nighttime outfit. Everyone agreed, no snaps or button, zippers can be loud, but the magnetic front closure was perfect. I am super excited to get them and test them out because the idea is so cool to me!

We are just getting started prepping for baby boys arrival and I am still doing a ton of research to find the right things for us so stay tuned for more recommendations. If you have any baby must haves leave them below!

I’m Pregnant! – First Trimester Recap

I’m going to be honest, I feel like the first trimester for me was ROUGH. I for sure was not the pregnant woman who everyone said was glowing, more like barely keeping it together everyday! But I thought I would share a recap of my experience, how we found out, and some of the details from these first months. Head below for the details!

How We Found Out

I think I knew pretty quick when my period was a day late that I was pregnant, but Houston suggested that we give it a good week before we went and bought pregnancy tests. I had been tracking my cycles through the Flo app once I had gotten off birth control and so I knew the day or roughly the time frame that I should have gotten my period again and it just wasn’t coming. My chest was also really sore as well which isn’t a common period symptom with me, but I tried to not get ahead of myself and waited a full week after the day that I was supposed to start to take the test. I always envisioned telling Houston in a creative way or surprising him but we ended up going and picking up the tests and finding out together, which was perfect for us! I think that we were both surprised at the word “pregnant” when we flipped the test over because we really had only started “trying” for about two months. But regardless of time we were both so excited! I was only about 5 weeks so we decided to keep it our little secret together and wait a bit longer to tell our families.

Telling my side of the family! They were so shocked!

How I Felt

Honestly so far the first trimester has been the hardest so far! While I wasn’t throwing up constantly (tmi?) I was nauseous. All. Day. Long. It didn’t make eating hard it just made getting through the day that much more difficult. I didn’t know if my stomach was upset, if I was hungry, or if it was all in my head. I also started to get pretty constant headaches which is common I found out after talking with my doctor. I know that all sounds gloomy but I promise it gets better! Just know that if you feel like crap and want to sleep a lot, you are not alone, I was right there with you taking lunchtime naps and B12 to help my stomach calm down! I didn’t see a ton of body changes, for the longest time I just looked bloated or like I enjoyed a really filling dinner. We tried to get out for walks as much as we could but with the gyms closed it made it hard to get good workouts in. But we did what we could to get out of the house and get moving with the fatigue and nausea holding me back!

What I am Craving

I wouldn’t say that I have had any cravings up to this point, just the craving to eat! When I needed to eat I needed food right then or my stomach was going to be very upset. I had very intense hunger pains and coming from a very different eating schedule (I did intermittent fasting before getting pregnant) I was not used to feeling hungry right when I woke up in the morning. And I know you aren’t technically supposed to be a eating for two but I’m telling you, I was hungry all the time! I did want more carbs but honestly that’s normal for me, just decided to give in to that 😉

First Doctors Appointment

Waiting to get to that first doctors appointment was so tough! There was nothing more that I wanted than to see that first ultrasound with our little baby hanging out in my belly. But we had to wait until the 8 week mark until we could go and check up on things. Baby was doing great, had a super strong heartbeat and was the cutest little peanut I had ever seen! Houston was allowed to come to this appointment and it was really special to be able to see our baby on that screen together.

Prepping for Baby

I am already doing all the planning for the nursery and what we need when baby comes! Still deciding on some of the big items and making lots of lists for what a diaper bag needs, hospital bag, nursery items, and what to stock up on. It’s a little scary prepping for a baby during COVID but we are trying to prepare ourselves now as much as we can Incase another lockdown happens in the future.

The Best Mom Jeans + Buying Tips

I have to be honest. Before this year the only jeans I owned were old Abercrombie jeans from when I was in high school. Which was almost 10 years ago. So needless to say I needed a closet refresh and made it my goal this year to get some timeless and long lasting jeans and get rid of my old high school pairs that were just not fitting my style anymore. So I went through my closet, pulled all the jeans I wasn’t interested in keeping anymore and listed them for cheap on Facebook Marketplace (guide to selling literally anything online coming soon!) After about a week a had some extra spending money from my sales and I was ready to go on the hunt! My goal: find comfortable, cute, flattering, budget friendly trendy mom jeans.

I hate it when I see a cute outfit on Instagram and I click the like to know it and the jeans are $198 or above. As a girl on a budget I just can’t swing that! I looked for jeans under $100, especially jeans that went on sale for a really good price often. Here are my top favorites that I found.

Abercrombie Mom Jeans. These are a rigid fit so they have 0 stretch, which I actually love! They feel like a really good quality denim that will last you forever without wearing out. Yes, they don’t have a lot of stretch, but they do stretch out once you start to wear them and break them in throughout the day. I stuck with my normal size 28L in these jeans and while they were tight when I initially put them on they did loosen once I had worn them all day, they felt more comfortable around my thighs and hips. What I love about these is that I found them on a huge sale for under $30! They have cute distressing around the ankle and aren’t too wide at the bottom, which is not flattering on my body type. So I say wait for a sale or check the clearance section daily, you can find tons of cute jeans for under $30 there all the time! If you are 5’7″ and above I recommend going with the long inseam since it is distressed at the bottom, mine still are a little cropped around my ankles even with the longer inseam! (Also excuse my knee that looks like it is being suffocated, I have one string holding on before it breaks! Lol)

American Eagle Mom Jeans. I have been seeing these all over Instagram lately so when I found them on sale and had a discount code (making them around $25) I thought, why not, let’s try them! Pros, they are super comfy and not as rigid as a fit (if you like a more denim spandex type hybrid). I love the distressed knees and that the legs are pretty roomy. They are super cute with a perfect high waist. I will warn you, I do have two downsides. One is that the legs stays pretty wide at the ankles. I could go for a skinnier leg than what they have. The Abercrombie legs seem to taper ever so slightly which I find a little more flattering. The other semi con, semi pro is that the fabric is very thin. At first I didn’t really love that, but now that it is summer and the warmer temps are coming out I think they will be a great option when you want to wear jeans but don’t want to wear a heavy jean material. Overall I would say get them when they are on sale because they are so perfect for summer! I got a 6 and they have a little room around the waist but are snug in the hips so I would not be able to size down. If you are over 5’7″ I recommend going with the long or extra long inseam! The long inseam is even a little short on me so if you want more of a full length, go longer.

I shared my two favorite budget friendly choices above and now its time for some tips that helped me to find flattering mom jeans!

  1. Make sure you know what type of fabric you want and what type of fabric the jeans that you are getting are. When I got the Abercrombie jeans in the mail I was very surprised by the feel and fit because I didn’t look at that before I bought them! So if you know you like rigid jeans look for that type of material. If you are a comfy jeggings girl who likes stretch, look out for that! It will save you a lot of grief and time if you know what you want and make sure that is what you are buying (returns take forever and are a pain!) PS. American Eagle now has a stretch mom jean if you like your jeans to have stretch to them! Linked here!
  2. Measure your inseam. I made the mistake of getting a regular inseam because I can get away with that sometimes, but not when there is distressing on the bottom of most jeans now! So be sure to see what inseam each different pair of jeans has (it can vary by 1-3″) and measure it out on yourself! You can get them really high and cropped above the ankles or if you like a full length you can get a long or extra long inseam. Again, saves you time! I personally like them to be cropped right at my ankles, I think it is the most flattering and shows off your cute shoes!
  3. Don’t be afraid to try a straight leg jean to get the same type of look. Abercrombie’s straight leg jean is just as cute with with a more tapered leg! Still gives you a little loose fit but if you have slimmer legs or don’t want to fully commit to the mom jean these are a great option to still wear the trend.
  4. Size up for a looser fit. Most of the mom jeans that I have tried so have a more rigid fabric, so if you want a loose fit or want extra room in the hips and thigh area I recommend trying the size up. You might find them to be a little more comfortable to sit and bend in if you have hips or a booty!

Leave a comment below if you have tried these jeans or if you have a favorite pair of mom jeans that I should try out!

Leopard Shift Dress

It’s hard editing these pictures and putting these posts together now that I am back in Rexburg. I just miss the Sacramento sun so much! I literally drove my car for 15 seconds to the mailbox the other day because I didn’t want to try and cross my apartment complex that is currently covered in a thick sheet of ice. Lazy or genius? I say the second 😉

Spring time is almost upon us and this dress is perfect for spring and summer! It is made of a super lightweight fabric that won’t be too heavy when the temperature starts to heat up. I am a sucker for leopard print so I knew this dress would be perfect! I wanted to add a little something to give it more shape and this belt adds a great touch, not too skinny but not too thick either.  I am a firm believer that a belt can help any outfit look amazing! If you haven’t heard of JunieBlake before you need to click the link below! My friend Jules sells their modest clothes and can hook you up! They also make little girl clothes too which are adorable. Sweater Weather and A Giveaway

Hello hello! Welcome back! My mind is already on Spring and hopeful thinking that Idaho will have warm temperatures again (very wishful thinking on my part!) It has been FREEZING cold here with a whole week that was just -1 to -29 with windchill. It was so bad that one of our cars just refused to turn on so it was fun trying to use one car between the two of us for work and school but we made it through and when it finally warmed up to 20 degrees the car gave in and started for us. Needless to say its been a rough start of the semester for us! We are only on week two and I already want it to be over with!  Continue reading “Sweater Weather and A Giveaway”

The Only Apple Watch Accessory You Need

My big Christmas present from Houston this year was an Apple Watch. I never thought that I would own one of these but after hearing about how much my sister loved hers and reading more about it I wanted to give it a try. Best decision ever! I use it way more than I ever thought that I would.  I have a pair of wireless headphones and paired with the watch it makes working out, texting, and talking on the phone a breeze.

And with every new accessory you need accessories for your accessory. Do you follow? Let me introduce you to Bytten. They make accessories for the things you wear everyday, your Apple Watch, your Fitbit, your Jawbone, all things that could use a little spicing up! I love my watch but I wanted to make it match my personality more, to add a little bling to make it fun! My watch has the rose gold mini glam stack on. How cute does it look?! It adds such a fun touch and is truly one of a kind. You can even get other stacks and double or triple up to really bling out your watch! I don’t think that you can ever have enough bling, I am really tempted to get another stack so I can layer them up. And if you have a Fitbit they have a ton of really cute stacks that you can add to those too to really make them pop and look cute! These are one of a kind and make great gifts too if you know someone who could use a little sparkle in their lives!

Boyfriend Tee Styled Two Ways

These pictures were *obviously* not taken in icy Rexburg and looking back at them makes me miss home so much! These outfits were perfect for the sunny weather in Sacramento.

This is my favorite new go to shirt from Ava Rae Boutique because its a great stand out color and can be styled in so many different ways! Here I have styled it to be more dressy and paired with my favorite moto leggings for a more casual look. I love both! If you haven’t checked out this boutique you need to. They have the cutest clothes that are so on trend! If I could have my whole wardrobe be from them I totally would. If you live in Boise or close to it then you can stop by their store as well! I live a little too far away to make the trip but want to see their dreamy store in person! This shirt is linked below and is under $30, get it before its gone!

Stay tuned for a giveaway coming up and another amazing outfit that I styled with pieces from their store!

LYTE Planner

New year new you, right? I am so ready for the start of a new year!  Last semester I feel like I really got off track with my goals and am getting back to the place that I want to be.  I have tons of goals this year. Work out, eat healthy, journal, read my scriptures and pray more consistently, plan meals, and so many more things that I want to work on!

One of my biggest goals this year is to write things out and be a better planner.  For me writing things down and making lists is so important because it keeps me accountable and organized! Plus, being able to mark things off on my lists makes me feel so good too. One of my new favorite tools to help me be better about this is my LYTE planner, AKA my new bff. This planner has it all. One of its many amazing qualities is that each page is dedicated to a full day so I don’t feel like I have to skip writing things down because I don’t have enough space. I get to write down the tasks that I need to accomplish that day along with all of my homework assignments and still have room for more. Plus there also is a section for the meal plan for each day which is another big goal of mine! Another really special part of this planner is that it is all goal oriented and about “finding your truth.” I love this quote from their website that really sums up what sets their planners apart:

“The LYTE Planner is about defining who you truly want to be and how you really want to spend your time and building your life and schedule around those answers. The LYTE Planner starts with the “Truth Resolution” letter where you define who you want to be and what you want your year to look like. The LYTE Planner is also full of “Truth Prompts” which are one-of-a-kind journal pages that exist to help you nail down answers to the harder questions and prioritize the people and things that matter most to you. Each day in the LYTE Planner also starts with a “Truth Focus” which is there to keep you centered and focused every day no matter how crazy your schedule may get! Finally, the LYTE Planner has extras like a “Bucket List” and “Goals” sheet to keep you dreaming, discovering, and doing! More than anything, the LYTE Planner encourages you to live from your place of truth so you can create a life that you’re truly proud of.”

Who doesn’t want to live a life they love and are proud of?! I know that I do! And sometimes when we don’t feel like we are doing super great that can be hard and cause us to lose motivation (that was me the last couple of months!).  But I know from experience that when we are doing the things that we are supposed to, when we are writing down our goals and dreams and working towards accomplishing them, that we are going to feel good about ourselves and have that motivation to keep going.  The times that I have felt down about myself have been the times when I have not been doing the things that I should be doing and I lost sight of the woman that I want to be.  I wasn’t staying organized or working out or eating healthy.  But when I made the choice to change the things that I wanted to change (like going to the gym and plan out healthy meals) I have felt so much better and had more motivation to set new goals.

I know that we all have goals and dreams and things that we want to accomplish. I also know that when we write these things down and look at them daily that we can really work towards them and accomplish whatever we put our minds to! Because we all want live our own truths everyday.

*LYTE planners are now on sale for only $32. Trust me, you will not regret buying this! We can all work on our goals and plan together 😉
